Are you over 50 now, or are you interested in finding out what awaits you after 50? Well … let’s see what changes. First of all, the aging process (we are all in that process although it makes itself more noticeable later rather than earlier for most of us) is a downhill one. If you think that’s bad news, the good news is that there is plenty you can do about it and stay younger than your fellow Americans as you age.
While aging is a degenerative process, great nutrition, mindfulness, and working with your body, feelings, and thoughts can certainly alter your behavior in positive ways, saving you the pain so many experience after 50 and beyond. So, a mixture of good, common sense, science, positive thinking/feeling, and behaving will go a long way toward helping you feel very fit in the later stage of your life!
Personally, I would rather go out of this life as a person who did not let herself “go.” For me, it becomes more of a choice than a dictate of degenerating health, and I certainly choose to live my life – however long – to the fullest, feeling good, strong, and positive. Don’t you want this too?!
Although our bodies do not respond quite the same to exercise as we age, and you might feel more fatigue and aching in joints, etc., there are some good tips to follow. Stretch every day, and especially after you have worked out. Before exercising, or doing something you enjoy like dancing, bike riding, etc., and warming up – this increases your circulation and signals your body that you will start doing something more physical.
To combat decreasing bone density and muscle mass, typical of the aging process, do some resistance training – work out moderately with weights, for example. You can also do cardio, like walking on the treadmill or taking a walk outside – so both together make you stronger and help keep you younger.
One of my favorite holistic medical doctors, Dr. Joseph Mercola, has an excellent article entitled Top Tips on How to Get Fit After 50…it’s a great read. In this article you’ll be able to learn about very detailed ways to stay physically fit after 50.
So, remember – how you age is largely your choice – not your genes.
