As soon as you can! Taking good care of ourselves is a continual, life-long process. When we are taking care of ourselves, and we have children, we are passing along good health to our unborn babies and starting from the get-go to model good self-care … part of good parenting. This covers both nature and nurture.
However, no matter when you start taking better care of yourself – it is a great thing. The human body has an amazing ability to heal and be resilient and resistant from all invaders, and these processes are enhanced even more so when we take good care of ourselves.
So, whether you are trying to repair damage, or just trying to get ahead of the 8-ball so you don’t get sick, it’s always a good idea to practice self-care. Many individuals have been able to overcome otherwise hopeless diagnoses, but please remember – always work with at least one competent, experienced, well-trained health care professional!
Some people beat the odds even when they have advanced disease. Dr. Joseph Mercola, in his article entitled, Kelley Treatment: The Cancer Treatment So Successful – Traditional Doctors SHUT It Down, explains how terminal patients who did this holistic approach survived significantly longer feeling better than those who only did conventional treatment.
Think about the aging process. While it is certainly a degenerative process, we usually think of getting frail, bent over, getting serious diseases like cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. in addition to our hair turning gray or white and getting wrinkled skin. Ugh. It doesn’t have to be this way. There are areas where people age much more gracefully, such as Italy, Japan, Costa Rica, and Greece, among others. Scientists look at their lifestyle choices when analyzing why they fare better than the rest of the world.
So, what does that mean? It means we can live better and longer while feeling good. This is best achieved through multiple means. For example, we can watch what we eat, not drink alcoholic beverages at all (or at least too much), not smoke, practice some form of moderate exercise ongoing even if it’s just walking, take supplements, meditate, etc.
You shouldn’t worry that this seems like a lot of work. It may be at first, but when you start to reap the benefits of feeling better, having more energy, being happier, etc., it no longer feels like work. You start to look forward to it and are enjoying your new lifestyle choices.
