Amino Acids: Miracle Treatment for Mental Health?

Well, perhaps one could consider the emerging science and treatment of mental health conditions – especially depression – as miraculous being that they are so effective in such a large part of the population we treat, and without the toxic side effects (although there are some exceptions), but perhaps these types of miracle responses have been right under our noses since the beginning of time! And by the way – they are very cost effective to use as well!

Amino acid therapy (and some use other nutrients in combination with it as well as in tandem with medications) is administered either orally or intravenously. I am not certain if one method of delivery is more effective than the other, but if some people are not getting the desired effect taking them orally, perhaps a referral can be made to try IV administration. They get into the blood stream right away and we might see a more robust effect. Plus, the injections can be paired with other types of supplements.

There is a great peer-reviewed journal article on this subject called Nutritional Therapies for Mental Disorders and you can view it here. In this article by Lakhan and Vieira, they state “4 out of the 10 leading causes of disability in the US and other developed countries are mental disorders.” Hence, the prevalence of these problems means we must take note and find better therapeutic techniques and outcomes.

As always, your diet is your foundation stone for your overall health, and this includes your mental health. Much of what occurs in the body is directly (or sometimes indirectly) impacted by the health of your gut, which houses about 2/3 of your immune system. The human body needs 20 amino acids, and there are 9 that the body must ingest from foods that are called essential amino acids. These are histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine. Some examples of foods that contain these 9 essential amino acids are whey, meat, rice, pea, spirulina, fish, eggs, etc.

In fact, food plays such a large role in maintaining and repairing the human body and mind – and so much of this is being researched today by many very enlightened medical doctors – that learning to eat healthfully and stop eating foods that tear down our health seems imperative. Here is another article by Dr. Joseph Mercola called Top 22 Foods to Add hears of Healthy Life, and it contains some very sound advice to creating overall robust health using your diet choices.

For more information on how to treat disease with food instead of (or in addition to using medication), please see this video by Dr. Mark Hyman interviewing Dr. William Li, internist and author of the new book, Eat to Beat Disease. Additionally, as a vascular biologist, Dr. Li focuses largely on growing new blood vessels, or, angiogenesis, a new field in, for example, cancer treatment.
