Most or all of you are aware that each March we celebrate women. Although it took time and much lobbying, in 1980, President Jimmy Carter declared that March 2-8 would be National Women’s History Week. Since 1987, we have officially been celebrating the entire month of March.
How is this good for our mental health? Groups of people, women included, who have suffered some kind of oppression and other types of abuse, have had to fight for their rights. History shows us that if we do not keep up the battle, we might lose the freedoms, rights, and privileges we so deserve. Celebrating is a way to keep that battle alive, as well as reflecting upon our own contributions, lives, and those of others. This is good for our identities and personal growth. Being proud of being a woman and having respect for yourself can only be for the good. When we have high self-esteem, others tend to have respect!
Each year has a special theme and special honorees. This year’s theme is “Nevertheless she persisted: Honoring women who fight all forms of discrimination against women.” The National Women’s History Project says that the 2018 theme “embodies women working together with strength, tenacity and courage to overcome obstacles and achieve joyful accomplishments.”
Ask yourself if you would like to be a more active part of this fight for equality and recognition. Just as awesome is taking some time to reflect upon yourself as a woman and how you regard yourself (if you are a female). If you are a male, now is a good time to reflect upon how you think about and treat women. In any case, be proud of yourself – who you are and what you have accomplished, no matter how large or small. It all counts!
