Self-Reflection/Self-Care

Taking the time to review things is usually a good thing.  Whenever we’re doing a job, we often take the time to look over our work after we’ve finished to make sure we’ve done everything correctly.  Likewise, with this being tax season, many people are reviewing their tax returns (possibly multiple times) to make sure everything has been entered and calculated accurately.  However, sometimes we forget to perform the same care with our own personal lives.  We can do this through a process of self-reflection and self-care.  When we’re going through the business of life, we sometimes remember to take care of everything except ourselves.  Throughout this blog, we will take some time to look at various ways we can perform self-reflection and self-care so that we can take care of ourselves as well as we take care of other things in our lives.
One way we can do this is by taking the time to examine our moods and the way we are feeling emotionally.  In other words, you could take some time to think about how you have been feeling over the past month or so.  Have you felt happy over that time?  Have you felt depressed?  Have you felt worried?  Have you felt any other negative emotions?  If you have, you should step back, take a good look at your life, and look for anything that might be causing you to feel those things.  If you can find anything that could be causing these emotions, you should consider what you might do about them.  It might involve changing who you spend time with (e.g., spending time with toxic people can give you anxiety, depression, and other negative emotions).  It might also involve making some larger changes in your life.  For example, if your employment is causing you to experience a lot of negative emotions, it might be time to consider changing your job or career.  This is a big decision that many people are reluctant to try.  However, we must remember that we need to take care of our well-being.

Something else you can self-reflect on is your diet.  The phrase “You are what you eat” isn’t just a pithy slogan.  It really is true.  The foods you eat really do play a role in how you function as a person.  Obviously, the foods can influence your weight.  However, many people don’t realize that your diet affects more than just the numbers on the scale.  Vitamins and nutrients can play a role in your moods.  If you’ve been feeling depressed lately, you might find that your diet is lacking in vitamins and nutrients that can help with depression.  Take a tally of what you normally eat every day and check the nutritional content.  If you’re not getting enough Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, Vitamin B6, or Zinc, that might be affecting your mood.

We need to remember that the ways we live our lives influence how our lives turn out.  Often, we end up getting into a routine and don’t realize what we do each day or why we do it.  That’s why it’s important to pause and self-reflect to see if there are any tweaks we can make.

And as always – please have a happy, holistically healthy day!
